BENTONITE
BENTONITE
Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay formed from the weathering of volcanic ash, and it’s primarily composed of the mineral montmorillonite, a type of smectite. It’s valued for its high absorbency, swelling capacity, and cation exchange properties, making it useful in a wide range of industries.

Types of Bentonite
1. Sodium Bentonite
- Swells significantly when exposed to water (up to 15–20 times its dry volume)
- Excellent sealing and binding properties
- Used in drilling muds, sealing ponds and landfills, and foundry sands
2. Calcium Bentonite
- Lower swelling capacity than sodium bentonite
- More commonly used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and as an absorbent
3. Potassium Bentonite
- Rare used in specific industrial processes
Key Properties
Swelling
High capacity to absorb water and expand
Viscosity
Used as a thickener in slurries
Thixotropy
Becomes fluid when agitated and thickens when at rest
Ion exchange capacity
Can absorb and release cations, making it useful for purification
Applications & Uses

Oil & Gas
Drilling mud for lubrication and cuttings removal
Drilling mud plays a crucial role in oil and gas operations by lubricating the drill bit and efficiently carrying rock cuttings to the surface. It ensures smoother drilling and prevents equipment wear.
Construction
Slurry walls, waterproofing, sealing
In construction, Bentonite forms slurry walls for waterproofing, sealing, and foundation stabilization. It creates a barrier to control groundwater and soil movement.

Foundry
Molding sand binder in metal casting
Environmental
Waste containment, landfills, remediation

Food & Pharma
Clarifying agent in wine/juice, detox clays
cosmetics
Face masks, creams for detox and oil control
